A few thoughts on it. The scorchers really sap you for gunboat energy thus leaving much energy left over for the scorchers. I think you were only able to smoke three times and that left them exposed to a lot of firepower. How about doing this challenge with just tanks. You'll have more gunboat energy for smokes and should be able to smoke them only to the HQ but also stun defenses around them for at least a little bit.
